How to stop Auto play in iTunes playlist

I saw an earlier post advising to un tick the boxes in the playlist so the next song will not auto play. If the boxes aren't there, set them up in preferences. I can't see that option in preferences and therefore have no boxes to tick. Is there another way of playing one song at a time when prompted in a playlist ?

Thanks

iPad Air 2, iOS 12

iTunes > Preferences > General > Show: List view tickboxes.

In the playlist use View > View As > Songs.

Cmd-click any checkbox to tick or untick them all.

Once all are unticked you can play any single track on demand and playback will stop at the end of the track.

I can play a single track on my iPad if I give it a long press and click Play Next from the pop-up menu, then tap the play button in the bottom right corner of the screen if up next is empty, or the forward button if needed to skip to the newly added track and then play when up next still contains a previous selection. Not quite so easy, but a mechanism to play one song at a time if that's what you need.
