My MacBook Air running High Sierra can only be started by holding down the Power button all through startup and login. It then asks to shut down, and does so even if not directed to. The machine is now useless. Any suggestions other than a discus throw?

Boot into Safe Mode for some app tests to see if rebuilding the caches and disabling some add-ons avoids the issues, and boot Hardware Test or Diagnostics for hardware tests, then potentially a repair if there’s a hardware issue shown.

If the NVRAM and SMC reset fails, throw it. Or probably better, take it in for service. Your call.
Thank you very much, but this doesn’t work for my computer. It won’t even allow me to boot in Safe Mode. If I don’t hold down the Power key, it won’t even get to the Logo screen. If I let up on the Power key, it immediately shuts down. No chance to get to the Shift key.
No matter what I do, it keeps showing the dialogue box “Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now”? No matter how many times I hit Cancel, it shuts down.
