the mystery of the book that just won’t go away

At some point in the past I download Apple’s The Swift Programming Language, Swift 3.0.1 Edition.

When I select Show iCloud Books it is displayed and I have found no way to delete it. Surely Apple does not intend for each year’s fresh crop of Swift publications to remain forever stored in their customers’ iCloud storage.

How can I eradicate this book?

That's a store book, so it's not taking up space in your iCloud Drive storage. If you download it, you'll be downloading it from the store, not from iCloud. Also, even though the cover is showing 3.0.1, I suspect if you actually download it you'll get 5.1 (or whatever the current version is).

You had to purchase it to download it, even though it was free. If you go to Books Store and click the Purchased links, that book will show up with all your other purchases. If you really want to get rid of it, you can hover over the book on that page and then click the 'X' to hide the purchase.
