How do I stop Numbers adding quotation marks when copying cell contents

I am trying to generate some HTML from within Numbers. I cannot seem to copy and paste this results into any other ap because Numbers seems to be appending quotation marks

Here is my formula: =CHAR(8232)&CHAR(8232)&"<!-- ! "

When I see this in numbers I see two blank lines and the start of a HTML comment. OK so far.

When I copy this and paste as a value into another cell within Numbers. this is what I get. OK ... but not that useful for me.

When I copy and paste from numbers to any other app ... then the quotation marks are appended.

If I remove the newline characters then there is no quotations appended ... only when the cell contains a new line do I see the quotation marks. Arrrgh!!!

When I copy a range of cells from numbers, some with new lines ... some without, the quotation marks are appended to each cell containing new lines .. but not those cells without the new lines.

How do I s top this apparent consistent inconsistency!

Since Numbers does not allow char(10) (but is Excel compatible?) Is there another way to create blank lines through formulae where Numbers does not break anything!

Can anybody reproduce this? Is it a bug?

Thanks.

Edited from my original reply:

I have Catalina and it copy/pastes correctly for me if pasting into something that accepts formatted text, such as TextEdit in RTF format. But if I paste into TextEdit when the document is plain text, I get the quotes.

If I run a script to change the clipboard to plain text before pasting, it then will paste correctly. If I paste into an RTF document in TExtEdit then change the document to plain text, it converts it without quotes.

OK. So I exported to Excel ... the deadline is coming!

Fixed up Excel ... and it did exactly the same thing. Copy/paste as values within Excel works fine, Copy from Excel to any other app ... quotes are appended whenever newline characters are involved.

Sounds more like a Cat;lina copy/paste 'feature' to me ... At least with Excel I can use VBA to copy/paste value into a new sheet. and use that.

Is there a way to move a thread to a different area (Catallina) rather than Numbers?

I am reluctant to double-post.

Thanks.

As a further test, I created a cell in Numbers consisting of an option-return followed by four characters, with the cell pre-formatted as text. When copied to the clipboard, the clipboard has seven characters, which I presume is the five I want plus the two problematic quotes. When I convert the clipboard to plain text, it trims down to 5 characters. If I do the same test but without the option-return (i.e., just the four characters), the clipboard has the four characters only and needs no converting.

I don't have a good solution for you, just providing additional information.

Since you have marked your second post as having Solved your issue, I would suggest reposting your question in Catalina rather than requesting a transfer of the discussion to that community. The Solved icon beside your question, if it has any effect, probably reduces the likelihood of drawing the attention of someone who cold provide a useful answer.
