Contacting apple will do nothing for you. They will try and take you through troubleshooting that won't work and than basically tell you that you have to buy a new pair of airpods. So basically you are screwed out of the money that you spent.

Contacting Apple is the best.
They can do the troubleshooting and check if they are within warranty, if they are potentially replace them.
