Black line across screen

I have a thin black line running across my screen. How can I get rid of it?

It sounds as though there is a black line that is running across the display on your iPad. You’re in the right place, we’d be glad to assist in seeking a solution.


First things first, does the line show up after restarting your iPad?

Restart your iPad


If it does, try taking a screenshot, then view the screenshot and zoom in. Does the line appear in the screenshot?


If the line on the display doesn't appear in the screenshot, then the issue will be with the display hardware. As such, we’d encourage you to get your iPad backed up and ready(Get your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch ready for service), then proceed to follow the information provided here: iPad Service and Repair


However, if the line does appear in the screenshot, the next step would be to get a backup created (Back up iPad). Let us know once that's done and we can go from there.

Thank you for replying back with the updated information regarding what steps you have completed. We understand that after taking a screen shot you are seeing the line visible in the screen shot.


In that case the next steps would be erase the device to isolate the software. To verify, did you create a fresh backup of your data? This resource below can help:

Please note, following the steps in this resource would erase all data present on the device.


After the device is erased, before restoring your data we’d advise first setting up the device as though it was a new iPad


Set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch


This can help to further isolate the issue, if the lines does not reappear when setting up the iPad as new we’d advise then restoring the backup:
