best and cheapest back up to transfer mac to a new mac?

I have a late 2009 mac and will need to transfer hard drive info to the new mac and looking for info on how to do it best and least $ way.

iMac, macOS 10.12

Do it via Target Disk Mode.

The fastest, cheapest and most reliable method is to connect the old iMacs Time Machine backup to the new computer and use either Setup Assistant (this is what launches the first time you turn on ANY new Mac) or Migration Assistant.

Simply connect the TM EHD to the new Mac with a USB cable and follow the on-screen directions. Works 100% of the time assuming you have been backing up the computer. If you have not been backing up that is a) a HUGE error as will guarantee a loss of data b) not wise computing.
