Use my 2012 iMac screen as a monitor?

I have a 2012 iMac and I’d like to use it as a monitor in my new MacBook Air dock setup. Is this doable with a multi-port hub with a thunderbolt connection, or do I need a hub with HDMI connection?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

You need a Thunderbolt connection, the MacBook Air must be no newer than 2019, and the iMac must have MacOS High Sierra or earlier.
