Why is my physical apple card not working at gas pump scanners?

This issue is not with Apple Pay, but with using the physical titanium Apple Mastercard at a gas pumps.

When I insert the card and withdraw it the pump simply indicates the card is not readable. Mastercard is accepted at the pump and all my other cards work but for some reason my physical Apple Card does not work at gas pumps, though it does work find everywhere else I have used it. The card readers at these gas stations just don't seem to be able to read the card, but again only at gas stations.

I have made a habit of trying all 4 orientations when this happens to me: 1) Card face up strip left 2) Card face up strip right 3) Card face down strip left 4) Card face down strip right. In all four orientation I am told the card is unreadable.

Store scanners seem capable of reading my card without incident, it's only gas pump scanners that seem troublesome. Were I having trouble elsewhere I would suspect somehow the magnetic strip was damaged, but it works everywhere else Mastercard is accepted; but, gas stations.

Hoping someone else out there is having similar issues and has an answer because I am stumped.
