have a old mac mini that I need to wipe the hard drive. how is this done?

I was able to erase the HD and use the disc to install the operating system. When the system reboots after installation it just shows the Apple logo and never finishes. The reboot disc is still in the cd drive. I’m at a loss to get it out.
