Apple watch our of storage

My apple watch keeps trying to update but it says storage full. It's a series 3. I go in to my watch app on my phone and it says there's 0 songs on my watch, 0 photos, and only 1 app. How is my storage full on my watch when there's nothing on it? Or how do I free up space to update it? Or do I have to buy a new watch?

Then Re-pair your Apple Watch, this frees up a surprisingly large amount of storage space. And without any loss of data.
