Forget this iPad.
It is nearly 11-years old and is obsolete!
It cannot be upgraded/updated any farther than iOS 5.1.1. and Apple ended support for this very first, 2010 iPad by 2012.
There are, virtually, NO more third apps for this old an iPad and other features, such as a very old Safari Web browser, are far too old and a security risk and cannot be trusted to be used on the Internet, any longer!
That iPad is far too old.
Sorry.
If you need/want an iPad with an up to date iPadOS with access to current, updated apps, then you really need to seriously consider a new iPad model OR a much, MUCH “newer” and less expensive, used iPad models, from better known, trusted Apple product/device retailers/resellers, capable of running the latest iPadOS versions.
There are plenty of newer, older iPad models that can run the latest, current versions of iPadOS.
Sorry & Best of Luck to You!
The first gen iPad didn't have cameras.
If this ends up being a 5th generation iPad or newer, then it's worth getting it up and running. I think you need proof that the original owner passed away and proof that you are the new owner in order for Apple to help.

Unbelievable. I want to have the device transferred to me, but that’s impossible to go through when I don’t know the person’s’ family... its not so much that I want access to their files, data etc.
If it's truly an original iPad (with no cameras) it's not useful for anything. Very, very few apps will run on the device.

It has a camera on it... i am not 100% on if its a first generation one, but pretty sure it is
Is there a way to know what model it is if I can’t get past that screen?
