I just redeemed $50 in gift cards

i wanted to buy a couple of navigation apps. Why doesn’t it default to use this credit?

It should default to using your Apple ID balance according to Change, add, or remove Apple ID payment methods - Apple Support:

"Apple will attempt to charge payment methods in order from top to bottom. You can't change the order in which Apple ID balance is charged."

Review the Support Article for some troubleshooting steps, and use the "Contact Apple Support" link at the bottom of the article if you can't fix it yourself.
