I'm a new MacBook user and I've already seen plenty of contradictory information on the topic. What's best for optimizing the MBP's battery life?

Let the computer manage the battery. You can leave it plugged in when convenient to do so. Neither your battery nor your computer will be damaged by leaving it plugged in.
