Watch display

The display on my watch does not go off when not in use

Yes it is if you turn always on display to off.

Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
Tap Display & Brightness, then tap Always On.
Turn off Always On.

If you have a watch 5 or 6 then that is called always on display,if you drop your wrist then the screen dims instead of going off completely,it can be turned off.

Is this what you are referring too?.

Thanks. So it is not possible to turn off the display when the watch is not in use?

Thanks for your response. When I tap on Display and Brightness it does not give me an option for Always On.

It only gives me Brightness and Text size
