Email vs Phone number

Is it possible to send and receive iMessages on a Mac with just an email address, and not the phone number?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.14

One more thing please to be sure; Someone who I did not give my phone number to sent me an iMessage on my Mac Air. If I did not give my number to them then would that have been possible? Or would someone else need to have given it to them?
