My iMac can send but not receive emails

The provider says it is an Apple problem. I can send and receive in browser and on my iPad, but my incoming mail stopped working. I tried re-entering my PW, but that didn't work. Suggestion seems to be to delate and reinstall my mail, but I do not want to lose all my files
