Voice dictation fails

Re: I do a lot of voice "typing" with my iPhone X. It never, ever makes it all the way through what I am trying to dictate; it always just stops in the middle of things, and I have to start again--by which I mean reactivate the microphone; it doesn't erase the text that I already have (and no matter where I am in that interrupted sentence, it always starts with a capital letter, which I have to then go back and correct).

Why does it do this? Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution for it?

THIS IS STILL A PROBLEM.

I thought I was the only one but a few others too it seems. I experience it daily exactly as described above. In the previous thread they suggested to put settings back to factory. Nothing has helped.

Hey, just a quick question or two- do you ever use any other kind of Bluetooth or audio accessories with your iPhone? Just curious, since I had the very same problem a while back, while listening to content with my fave cheap, third party BT headphones enabled! I’d tap the mic icon, audio would pause, as it always should no matter what audio Device you have enabled- whenever an iPhones’ voice dictation is access by tapping the mic icon on default keyboard- and then I’d have same exact behavior you describe occur! It was driving me bonkers, because it would happen randomly too, not even using my headphones, or listening to anything on the phone at all! Solved the mystery, sometimes my hubby would turn them on, while I was busy in another room, and had been trying to pair & use them with his iphone. But every time he tried it never worked because they would auto connect to mine! Even though the mic is terrible, The audio is boss for how cheap & comfy they are, & much better than his expensive fancy ones! He’s not really allowed to use mine, because his head is much bigger, and every time he would try them on-they sound like they’re gonna crack in half!! 😂. Seriously thought there was a ghost in the machine, before we figured it out! Frequently, whenever those were on & auto connected to my iPhone, before we figured out the culprit, the text that did pop up successfully, were words that were entirely different, not even similar sounding words, to mine!

I do know that the type of behavior you are seeing can also be software related, or only occurs when using VD with certain third party apps!

Especially since all of the upgrades in privacy and security features released, with our more recent iOS/iPadOS software versions, it’s imperative to keep your software updated to keep that microphone, and VD feature working smoothly!

Have you tried updating your iOS software? Or any other troubleshooting steps like recording a Voice memo, to be sure your mic is Working as it should?

If so, double check that you have voice dictation enabled, in Settings, General, Scroll down until you see keyboard cabinet and make sure the toggle switch is on, for Enable Dictation! If it is on already, I’d say try force restarting your iPhone, Just to give it a nice refresh! Just be sure to use the correct process for your iPhone, found here: https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/force-restart-iphone-iph8903c3ee6/ios

I hope that helps! If not, definitely reach out to Apple Support directly via chat or phone to report it! Your device may need more extensive troubleshooting or service!

While I was having the issue yesterday I tried disabling wi-fi, disabling Bluetooth closed all the applications and reopened the messages app so I could reattempt to send my text message. This is not a situation of being connected to another device or anything like that. I've had this happen across four different iPhones. I had two iPhone 11's and iPhone 12 and the 12 pro max. All four of these phones have had the exact same issue. It's not something that can be reproduced on command which really sucks so it's tough to troubleshoot.

I would consider myself to be a very advanced user. When I'm faced with the situation a try closing other applications in the background one at a time just to see if it makes any difference. It does not. Then I went in disabled voice dictation and re-enabled it and still face the same issue. It is the strangest thing it's like just every once in awhile the voice dictation does not want to work properly. Of course Apple will come here and first tell me to restart. That will really frustrate me. Can we start somewhere a little further advanced?

I understand exactly you feel entirely, and shared your same point of view at the time! I just wanted to know if you had the same kind of bluetooth accessory auto connecting as your primary audio output, sometimes, but just did not know it was happening, like I did. Because VD worked perfectly sometimes, when I went through what you are going though too. It could not be reproduced on Demand. I went bonkers trying to figure it out, even full factory restore, and everything! If you already tried updating your iOS, and all basic troubleshooting has failed, reach out to apple support and ask for help with advanced escalation teams! Let the chat advisor or phone support person you speak with that you have tried updating, force restarting with the exact steps for the newer force restart method for specific iPhone, all basic apple provided articles to troubleshoot microphone steps, and are an advanced user, that you need more specialized assistance. (or just ask to speak with a senior advisor about an issue that goes beyond all basic Tier 1 troubleshooting steps, if you don't want to go through that explanation with them first). If that same issue is persisting across all your devices, there might be a deeper problem with something related to your iCloud backups, if you have set up your phones from an iCloud backup each time, for example. Advanced support from apple's engineering team may be needed to resolve that issue. Nothing like that type of behavior should keep carrying over across multiple iPhones! That behavior is not normal, or common to occur at all.

I agree it should definitely not carryover from phone to phone. I have definitely set up from a brand new phone with my iPhone 12 promax which is the latest phone that does that for me. I have tried to go through while the issue is happening and disable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular connection and close all the applications and re-open all the applications and attempt to dictate once again to no avail. Sometimes it’ll start working mysteriously right away on its own. I’ve tried blowing in the microphone to clear and make sure that it’s not obstructed. I appreciate the reference to the Bluetooth stuff, again yeah that was not an issue in my case but great suggestion. The only thing I can do at this point that sometimes resolves the issue is without pressing the space bar I tapped the dictation button once again and it will let me complete my sentence in its entirety. However there is no space between the first word and where it failed the first time. The other frustration with that is that as everyone in the world is aware when you tap the voice dictation button regardless of where you are in a sentence even if dictation failed, it will start off with a capital letter. This is nonsense and has been going on all the way back to at least 2012 I can see based on a Google search. Why can Apple not get their stuff together?
