Watch doesn’t record my walks!

So I know lots of people have this problem. When on an outside walk, even though my watch records it it doesn’t register as my work out minutes. I’ve heard people talk about pace/heartbeat rate etc but 90% of the time I’m walking with my daughters and both of their watches work properly and add the minutes as you would expect.

any ideas why mine is different? Really annoying!
