The requirements say about 35.5 gb. (For macOS Sierra and later). Just to note, the OS wont take up all of this space, but just needs it temporarily during the upgrade process.
I wouldn’t hurt to free up just a bit more either. Hope that helps!

Also, just to clarify - you are not talking about memory. Memory is what RAM provides. You are dealing with space on your hard drive.
