Try connecting to a USB wired keyboard?

For the Apple Macs that are USB-C only, you’ll probably need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, or a dock with USB-A sockets, to make that connection with the commonly-available keyboards and mice. The Mac mini M1 2020 has USB-A sockets, so this swap is feasible without adapters.

Apple wireless keyboards and the Apple wireless trackpad can operate as wired, using a Lightning cable.

It’s also used as the re-pairing and the re-charging mechanism.

Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad with your Mac - Apple Support

Recharge the built-in battery in your Apple keyboard, mouse, or trackpad - Apple Support

Or borrow or buy wired devices, particularly if Bluetooth is problematic for whatever reason.
