Static noise from phone when not in use.

Lately I have been noticing my iPhone 12 Pro Max making a strange static noise randomly when I’m not using it. I’ve checked to make sure I was signed out of YouTube, music, Internet, etc. and that was not the problem. I woke up at 3:20 this morning because I could hear a light static noise coming from somewhere…. so picked up my phone and put it to my ear and realised that it was coming from the speaker on my phone. I think this is very strange….. Its very concerning and makes me feel uncomfortable. Does anyone know why this is happening, or what it means? Is someone listening in on me and my family? Is my phone tapped? Please help! Thanks

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14

Hello CheshireCat702.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you have a concern about an odd noise coming from your iPhone. Let's walk through some steps to help you identify it.

You mentioned signing out of apps, but we'd recommend force closing all your apps, restarting your iPhone then testing it to see if you hear the static again.

Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch

You will want to make sure the app is fully closed and not re opened after you restart your iPhone. If you let your iPhone sit for long enough that you determine the noise would have started, slowly start opening one app at a time. This can help you determine which app might be causing the sound.

Also, you can look at your iPhone display to determine if the green or orange indicator lights are showing. This will help you find out if an app is using either your camera or microphone.

About the orange and green indicators in your iPhone status bar

All the best.
