GPS chip is it defaulted on for a Iphone 12

I have a iphone 12 is the GPS chip defaulted on?

Do I have to have the cell service on for it to use location in Apps?

I'm a geocacher and location is very important for me to locate caches and location is everything. I need to get the setting correct, in some area there is no cell coverage. GPS working without cell cover is a must for my game. Who can I ask or where do I look. this is my first iphone. Thanks 🌎🐸🙂

GPS is always available*, irrespective of cellular coverage.

*all discussions of power savings and of satellite coverage aside.

Cellular coverage is used for and provides lower-power-requirements course positioning.

Apps can and often do request lower-resolution and more power-efficient positioning.
