I have a MacBook Pro...older and unable to update the OS. I use Chrome as default browser. Am being blocked from websites in my bookmarks as being unsecured when I've accessed them routinely for a long time. I've tried changing my security preferences, etc. What else might I try?

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

I've been notified that I can't upgrade my OS because my laptop model is too old.

You were incorrectly advised. A 2011 MacBook Pro can run up to macOS 10.13 High Sierra, a very reliable OS version that should get you a newer version of Safari. High Sierra specs:

macOS High Sierra - Technical Specifications

The problem is that Apple's software update system makes it hard to find older upgrades. See this Apple support article:

Use Safari for any downloads. We know FireFox does not properly handle macOS upgrade files and I suspect the same issue could exist with Chrome.

Old browsers linked to older, less secure OS versions lose favor with web site owners and that can cause access trouble. A higher macOS version may help you get a newer and more compatible browser version. Please do "About this Mac..." from your Apple emna and tell us what that shows for your SUB-MODEL:

From that we can advise if there is an OS upgrade path available to you.

I've been notified that I can't upgrade my OS because my laptop model is too old... Planned obsolescence, I guess. It's a just fine laptop and operates great except for bits and pieces loosing operational capacity due to this little quirk that seems to force us to purchase new computers!
