Problem: New iPhones for husband and wife are receiving texts meant for one iPhone.

How can I correct so that texts sent to me are not in duplicate sent to my husband's iPhone?

Immediately stop sharing an Apple ID. Each person, regardless of age, needs her/his own, unique Apple ID.

The person acquiring a new Apple ID must thoroughly cleanse her/his Apple device(s) as follows:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Then “move in” using the new Apple ID with only her/his possessions.

Family Sharing is an option.
