After upgrade to Monterey, trackpad not working even bluetooth mouse is not connected if "Ignore built-in trackpad" is checked

I finally got enough time today to update my MacBook Pro (early 2015) to Monterey. The update went OK, but now my touchpad refuses to work if "Ignore built-in trackpad" is selected even when I switch off my Magic Mouse2.

Before the update, it was working as expected - when the mouse is connected, the trackpad is not responsive, but as soon as switch off (or disconnect) the mouse, the trackpad started to work.

I had the very same issue after upgrading to BigSur, and SMC reset fixed everything. Unfortunately it did not worked this time. I did it twice without results. The only way to get the touchpad working at the moment is to deselect the "ignore built-in trackpad" option in System Preferences => Accessibility => Pointer Control. But this is very inconvenient since I type a lot on my MacBook and during typing I prefer to have the touchpad off.

The funny thing is that the touchpad IS clickable immediately after power on, all until my MBP boots up, when it for some reason "thinks" there is a mouse attached even there is none.

It is obviously a software issue and any help is much appreciated!

Many thanks,

Jager

What Jagerz described exactly the same happend to me and according to the well known other Apple communities it’s happening to a lot of others even already in the beta version.

”Fortunately” it is not happening whne i go to the guest account and a second user account with all rights…Weird, weird.

Via the second user account I was able to switch on Bleutooth and can use my mouse in my First user account.

Tryed SMC and NVRAM reset and starting up in Safe Modus.

To Install the OS again, won’t help, I think, the rest is working fine.

Can I say I am fortunate by having accidentally a mouse…and a second user account with all rights…?

Apple this is not how It schould be, getting worse every year.

Hi Olda1950,

Yes, you have exactly the same issue like me. With this option unchecked, the built-in trackpad will be always enabled, regardless if there is another pointing device connected or not. But, this is not how it should work, really...

I am waiting for the delivery of the new MacBook 14" and it should arrive in a day or two. We'll see if the whole problem is somehow related to hardware and will not happen on M1Pro chipset... or, it will :) I'll let you know. In any case, there is nothing physically wrong with my old MacBook, the touchpad is working flawlessly (when enabled... ;) )

It looks like this issue is related to Intel based MacBooks only. I have upgraded to a 14" MacBook Pro and everything works as expected - the touchpad turns off when I turn on my Magic Mouse, and turns on if the mouse goes off.

Same OS version, exactly the same Magic Mouse 2, just different CPU in the MacBooks. Weird.
