Two factor authentication

What if I only have one apple device? I'm about to get rid of all my apple devices except my phone, and I want two factor authentication turned off NOW before I only have one device and am stuck. This is a sneaky way apple is forcing people to buy more than one apple device, and I don't like it. I'm thinking about complaining to the BBB and any other place I can think of. I'm sure there's something in those ridiculously long user agreements that no one ever reads saying we agree to use irreversible two factor authentication, but this isn't right. It's a hassle when someone loses or breaks their second device or in my case if they want to get rid of their unnecessary apple devices. How does apple intend to address this issue? I've already seen dozens of complaints from just one Google search.

Two-factor authentication is enabled by default on new Apple IDs and cannot be turned off.


If you have an old account (several years old) and recently activated Two Factor Authentication note this section of an Apple support article:

"Two-factor authentication for Apple ID" - https://support.apple.com/HT204915

"Can I turn off two-factor authentication after I’ve turned it on?

... If you recently updated your account, you can unenroll within two weeks of enrollment. Just open your enrollment confirmation email and click the link to return to your previous security settings ..."


There's many ways to get a verification code which do not require you to own a second Apple device:

- Use a Trusted Device: Mac, iPhone, iPad, Watch. Code is either generated automatically or manually using Settings on the Trusted Device.

- Text or phone call to a trusted telephone number (any telephone; even landlines).

- Get a code from an Account Recovery Contact --> https://support.apple.com/HT212513
