upgrading

I have an iPhone on finance with apple themselves and wonder if I can upgrade?

You would have had to sign up for either. You don't remember? In the US, the Apple Upgrade program is serviced by Citizen One bank, and you would be making payments to them. If you ordered your iPhone online, and just selected the 24 month payment plan with the Apple Card, then that is done strictly through the Apple Card.
