Do older accessories work with my new iPad Pro?

I’m getting a new 11” iPad Pro for Christmas to replace my current 9.7” iPad Pro. I have an Apple Pencil I use with the old iPad Pro. How can I find out which generation the pencil is (if there’s more than one) and if it will it work with the new iPad Pro? I hate to replace the pencil since it works just fine.

Which do you have? Here's how to recognize them:

The first generation Pencil is round and has a cap on the end that you remove to reveal the Lightning plug for charging.

The second generation Pencil has one flat side where it magnetically attaches to the iPad for charging; it has no cap.

Current iPad Pro models need the second generation Pencil.
