Lock iPhone

My mother-in-law gave my daughter her old iPhone. My daughter has now locked it out and the iPhone is asking me to connect to iTunes. I do not have iTunes nor when I connect to my mac with the phone, nothing happens. Thoughts?

Turn the iPhone off before connecting and use the following instructions: If you forgot your iPhone passcode - Apple Support

Note that on Macs running macOS Catalina, Big Sur or Monterey the procedure uses Finder instead of iTunes.
