Apache2 not allowing access to user's folder

I set up apache on a new M1 MacBook Pro following the instructions at https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250004361

Everything worked according to plan. I got the message "It Works!". But when tried to serve my Sites folder using localhost/~myusername in Safari, I got "Forbidden

You don't have permission to access this resource."

I have tried for a couple of days to find the problem. I checked the permissions for my user folder, they include at the top "_www"-"Custom". Any help on where the problem could be would be appreciated. All seems setup correctly.
