VIP Mailbox(es) Gone

1-month-old M1 MacBook Pro running MacOS Monterey. I did not migrate my user info from my old machine. I noticed that my VIP mailboxes were listing only a few recent messages, and sometimes none at all. I removed VIPs from the favorites bar, and now it's completely gone form the sidebar. I've tried removing and re-adding VIPs to no avail. The two VIP plist files are still there and show the correct email addresses. Quitting and relaunching Mail does nothing.

So is there a genius out there who knows how to restore the VIP mailboxes?

MacBook Pro 15″, OS X 10.10

Thanks for replying. I've tried all of these things and everything else I can think of -- except rebooting, which I'm too busy to do right now. It feels like some sort of bug. Removing VIPs from the Favorites bar should not destroy the VIP mailbox(es). And, as I said, the requisite VIP-related plist files are there. So obviously it should be present and visible. This is Mac OS 12.1, by the way.
