Is there a simple way to delete duplicate contacts? I'm up to 8 copies of each contact!

The technical support article on how to remove duplicate contacts in icloud is circular and does not give instructions on how to remove them. I have 8 instances for every contact now on my iphone, which is synced with my icloud contacts. I have Outlook on my iphone and I suppose that is creating the issue but I need help on how to 1) remove the duplicates and 2) how to stop this from happening.
I have hundreds of contacts. Is there also a way to just delete duplicates?
