The problem's been fixed now by my pressing a combo of keys on the sides of the phone.
Having read more now, I can see that the two answers I've received would totally have worked if I even could have gotten to an unlock screen in the 1st place or gotten any response when I pressed the red time button. The phone, whenever on, would only show a screen saying emergency contacts had been notified , and was frozen that way.
