How is the Estimated Expiration date decided for the iPhone limited warranty?

For Repairs and Service Coverage how is the Estimated Expiration date decided

For example if my estimated expiration date is Aug 17th does that mean i set up the device on Aug 16th

No it means you set it up on Aug 18th - that is the first day. It's not a "decision", it is math = 1 year warranty expires 364 days later. In your example - Aug 17th.
