Woke up this morning and my phone had a message that "Apple Card cannot be your default card"
If I remove it and reinstate it then I lose transactions. Why did this happen? and how can I prevent the loss of transactions?

There was a software update. Once that is installed I had to remove the card and then add it again

When you do the you will loose recent transactions, thats what my phone said.
Called Apple Card this morning, they said there's a problem and they're working on it.
