Can I back up my iPhone onto a MacBook without using a cable?

Yes. The initial (first) backup has to be done when the iPhone is connected to the Mac with a cable. Ensure that the checkbox, “Connect your device over Wi-Fi” is selected. After the first backup has been completed with a cable connection, then the subsequent backups can be initiated and completed wirelessly from the Mac.
