Use iPad speakers when connect to HDMI Monitor?

So far as I can see, when my 2018 iPad Pro 11" is connected via USB C to HDMI cable to an external monitor there's no way to use the iPad speakers.

If this is true then the only option would be to use Bluetooth Audio because my monitor does not have speakers.

If this is correct I'd love some explanation as to why it's not possible to just switch the audio output back to the iPad speakers. This is BASIC functionality and absolutely asinine that it's not an option in iPad OS 16. Please fix this Apple!

I have only found one resolution... instead of using a USB C to HDMI cable, use a USB C to DVI cable. I'm not an engineer, but my understanding is that HDMI consists of DVI for video and an audio channel. Buy using DVI, the iPad assumes that the monitor cannot handle audio, so does not route it there.

Of course, you'll have to use an older monitor, as the new ones only have Thunderbolt, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

I totally agree. And it should be! I’m not criticizing the automatic function to divert the audio to HDMI when it’s connected. What I’m extremely frustrated with is the inability to choose to divert the audio back to the iPad speakers even if the video is displayed on an external monitor. This functionality is widely available on the majority of platforms including most Apple products.
