It could be a hardware problem as you suspect, but make sure that you did not inadvertently alter some settings in Accessibility Preferences: Change Accessibility settings on Mac - Apple Support. For example, Display settings for accessibility can enable all sorts of groovy colors.

I wouldn't give up just yet. The worst that could happen would be that you decide it's not worth fixing.
