Sierra to High Sierra

I thought I had kept my MacBook up to date but had kind of stopped paying attention to it after I got my MacAir. Apparently it's only updated to Sierra. I downloaded and tried to install High Sierra and it tells me I need a 10.13 update which doesn't exist. I did see another thread about an update but the person kept referring to a High Sierra link which is the one I used to download, so please don't just drop that link and think that's helpful. I'm not super technical so I guess I need whatever fix to this issue explained to me as if I am not an employee at the Genius bar that has uninstalled and reinstalled things thousands of times.

I really do appreciate any help I can get with this. My Mac still runs wonderfully, I just need it updated.

You don't tell us what link, but I highly suspect you downloaded a High Sierra Combo Updater not the High Sierra Upgrade Installer.

I can't include a link, the paste feature just causes a buffering wheel. As you can see by this screenshot, I downloaded this (screenshot 1) and in screenshot 2 you can see it is asking for 10.13. I cannot find a 10.13, this is the only high sierra download there is.

Yes, that is an incorrect download, it's an Updater for those that have 10.13.0 or v10.13.1

This link should ask to open in the App Store & when you allow that you get...

annndddd this is what happens when I follow the link and click open. should I delete what I downloaded then try again?

ok I see what happened. I have deleted the one I downloaded and am now downloading a fresh version of what you linked. Cross your fingers and thanks for the help. I'll update after this step.
