Do I purchase gps + cellular or just gps ? For grandson in Another state

It depends if they have their own iphone and if they want to use it while the iphone is not nearby. If they want to use it without the phone nearby it needs to be cellular+gps
Phone needs to be iphone 8 or later on ios16.3 or later.
If they don't have their own iphone but their mom or dad have an iPhone of that specification it can be set up as a Family watch but it must be cellular+gps and series 4 or later. It needs its own cellular plan on eSIM.
If there is no apple iphone in the family at all then Apple Watch is not for them.
