You don't have to use the old Apple ID but you will need to enter the credentials for the old account to remove the Activation Lock.
From there you can change to your new ID
Yes, it’s looking for an old Apple ID and password. Which we are not using anymore. So I think it’s not totally re-set.
Says the old Apple ID is invalid, so I can’t re set password.
