forward and back buttons (< >) at top of safari screen are gone. How do I restore them?

Click Safari's View menu > Customize Toolbar...

A dropdown selection of icons (what it calls "favorite items") will appear. Drag the forward and back buttons back to where you want them. Or, drag the entire default Toolbar set.
