Software updates not installing
I have a 2015 iMac running Big Sur. I have automatic updates on but still get a message software update available. When I open it the wheel just keeps spinning until I close it out

Hi mackathy456
Welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community.
Re: Software updates not installing
For iMac 2015 models:
Identify your iMac model – Apple Support
says:
"Latest compatible operating system: macOS Monterey"
Try looking in System Preferences > Software Updates
See if you can choose to update to macOS Monterey from there,
(instead of using automatic updates).
Else
For a link to download Monterey OS:
How to download macOS - Apple Support
If needed:
There's a "Get Support" link (online chat, phone, eMail)
at the bottom of the website (link below)

All the best :-)

There was an Update for Big Sur released Wednesday Feb 15, 2023 bringing Big Sur to version 11.7.4
There are factors:
1 - Like poor Wifi connection
2 - Slow wifi connection
3 - Too many other people downloading at the same time and Apple Severs are overloaded
4 - Software on the computer interfering with the download process including AntiVirus Software
Notation: Disabling the AV Software may or may not solve the issue. Removal of the AV Software may increase the chances of the download to perform as expected.
5 - Running behind a VPN which may increase Packet losses or corruption of the download
6 - If via wifi too many Other devices using the wifi at the same time reducing the Bandwidth to your computer.
7 - Best Results are via Ethernet Cable to Router
8 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal and Try Again using the Software Update Applet in System Preferences
With that in mind there are options available.
1 - To see the entire Computer, both Hardware and Software as it is presently >>
Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.
This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.
It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer
The application is free or paid from added features.
The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.
Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - >>>> using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last ) <<<<
We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.
2 - Explore the Apple Trade-In Process where the Value of the exiting device could be used against the cost of a new Apple Computer, iPhone or iPad
Or Shop Refurbished Apple computers at an Apple Reduced Cost
Have used both previously and have been satisfied each time.
Yes the update was successful, unfortunately the issue I was having which I hoped the update would resolve is
still a problem everything loads very slow doesn't matter what I'm opening ,safari, photos, mail.
I"m about ready to just buy a new computer. But I appreciate your help..Thanks
Thank you for joining the discussion, and providing these excellent tips, P.Phillips !
Cheers :-)
We ( a collectively we ) can certainly offer OP some very useful insights regarding their computer issue
You too keep up the good work 🇨🇦
I unable to get it to open in safe mode
After starting in safe mode I have been able to begin the process of updating to Monterey. Thanks for your help
Phew, was about to reply to earlier post about not able to restart in Safe Mode
Ok and please do keep us posted on the progress.
Hopefully it will be successful
