Hotel wifi security
I might go on a road trip vacation and would like opinions on using hotel wifi's if I brought Mac book air with. Or is it too risky and just leave it at home?? Thank you in advance. ( I could just use my iPhone again)

Biggest issues with this are probably loss, theft, and damage, and not the hotel Wi-Fi.
Hotel Wi-Fi is a non-issue. Well, other than finding actually-working hotel Wi-Fi, that is.
I do not recommend add-on first-few-hops VPNs or other heavily-hyped and oft-problematic “solutions” to a “problem” which hasn’t existed for a decade or so.

Millions of business travelers use hotel and other WiFi every day without incident. I don't think your use of the hotel WiFi is of concern.

Using a Mac at a Hotel:
I'd say create a new Administrator user, for temporary use. Log in to that user while you're logged in to the Web.
If malware is a concern, and which isn’t the direct question here as it’s one of communications security, do not create and use an administrator account if y’all want to partition your environment. Use guest, or create and use a non-admin user. Not a member of the Admin group.
Use MalwareBytes for Mac:
The built-in anti-malware does just fine.

As for securing your Mac.
Use MalwareBytes for Mac:
This is software that searches for malware/adware. So, scan with it and then remove what is found. Once removed, uninstall MalwareBytes for Mac. Then restart the Mac. It is created by longtime users of these forums. So, that is why it is the only way to go about securing your Mac, when it comes through use of software
