About Gift Card Scams - Apple Support

In addition to the common Gift Card scam, there are many others that may result in more severe consequences:

• Don't trust links in emails. You may get an email from what appears to be your bank wanting you to sign into your account and a scammer could use that information to drain your account.
• Don't sign in another person's ID into your phone no matter what excuse they give you. This will leave your phone locked to their account and you would need to prove the device is actually yours by submitting the original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple seller.
• Some emails claim you have been hacked and the scammer tries to convince you they have access your account and demand money. The solution is to simply delete the email.
• Fake technical support emails/messages are also common where a scammer convinces you to give up your personal/financial information.

Stay safe out there! Once you have fallen for a scam, the damage has been done with little to no recourse other than preventing it from happening again. There is no Undo button.

If this was a Gift Card that you purchased and found out that it was empty when you attempted to redeem it, then it was likely purchased it from a retailer where they display the Gift Cards on a rack where they are accessible to the public, and it was redeemed shortly after you activated it in the check stand. Retailers are very aware that people in their stores are taking Gift Cards off of those racks and peeling the sticker off and writing the code down. They can easily replace the sticker with one purchased from Amazon and return the cards to the rack and wait for the store's customers to activate them.

Ironically those same stores will lock up products that they sell to prevent theft, but when it comes to their customers getting scammed in their stores, they don't seem to care at all. Since they are responsible for securing the Gift Cards, I would escalate the matter with the retailer and their corporate offices. In the future, only buy Gift Cards when they are secured behind a counter or purchase them from the Apple directly.

Note the "Do not share your code" in red letters on the bottom of the card. That is how you prevent getting scammed. More information about Gift Card scams is available here:
