Hey there engineer49,
Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities.
We want to help figure out what might be going on with your Apple Watch. One feature comes to mind, so worth taking a moment to see if this is enabled.
Use theater mode on Apple Watch
Theater mode prevents the Apple Watch display from turning on when you raise your wrist, so it stays dark. It also turns on silent mode and makes your Walkie-Talkie status unavailable, but you still receive haptic notifications.
Touch and hold the bottom of the screen, swipe up to open Control Center, tap , then tap Theater Mode.
When theater mode is on, you see at the top of the screen.
To wake Apple Watch when theater mode is on, tap the display, press the Digital Crown or side button, or turn the Digital Crown.
Use Control Center on Apple Watch - Apple Support
If that feature is not enabled, whenever we see this type of unexpected behavior, we recommend working through a couple basic troubleshooting steps. The reason we advise starting here is because more often than not, these steps will resolve any unexpected issues you're encountering.
Here's where to begin:
We hope this does the trick for you!
Cheers.

Thanks for your reply. I stumbled onto the theater mode and it does stop the problem. It must have reset during the OS update.
