USB-C Adapter compatibility with Mac

I need to use an USB-C adapter for my existing thumb drives for my laptop at home. But now my Mac at work will not recognize them. I tried using different ports, shutting down and restarting. Does not help. Thumb drives that I have NOT used an adapter with will open up fine on my work Mac.

there are two sets of hurdles you need to overcome to see those drives.

The Second is that once detected, Finder settings are such that external drives are shown on the desktop (which is no longer the default in recent macOS) -AND-.

The drives are in a format readable on your Mac. Some drives, such as NTFS format drives, may not be Mountable without added drivers. This gives the symptom of 'Mounts fine on this Mac' (that has the Drivers added) 'Won't mount on That Mac' (which lack drivers added.)

.

The First is the physical and power connection

¿Are the drives seen in Disk Utility?

Disk Utility can recognize far more kinds of Drives than can be Mounted and read on a Mac. if the drive can't be seen in Disk Utility, it can't be used.

¿Are the drives visible on a USB or Thunderbolt Bus?

 menu > About this Mac > (System report) > Hardware > USB

¿does each drive have enough Current available for what it requires to operate?

Okay, I tried an experiment. My work Mac still will not see the 2 thumb drives that I had connected to my laptop using a USB-C adapter, BUT I tried connecting them to my work Mac using a hub connector. My work Mac saw them both. After, I tried connecting them directly to my work Mac (without the hub connector) and my work Mac would not see them. Is that weird or not?

Thank you for responding. I will check out what you suggest. I want to mention that this is only a recent problem. Up to about 2 weeks ago, there wasn't any issue. I could use these same thumb drives on BOTH my laptop and my work Mac without needing a hub connector for the work Mac. Both computers' software is up-to-date, so that is not a factor. The ONLY thing that is different is that I charged my iPhone 12 on my work Mac (but did NOT sync it - only charged it), however I cannot see that as having any effect on this problem.
