Keyboard and Trackpad not working on Macbook

I have a Macbook air m2 chip and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working when I login. The only thing that works is that I can tap the trackpad and use other shortcuts, but the "clicking" part doesn't work. The keyboard doesn't work at all except for the power/finger print reader. I haven't used my Mac in a couple of days so I don't know why this would happen. Any ideas on what is wrong?

First, let’s see if this issue happens in Safe Mode:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button on your Mac. As you continue to hold the power button, your Mac turns on and loads startup options. When you see Options, release the power button.
  3. Select your startup disk. It's named Macintosh HD, unless you changed its name.
  4. Press and hold the Shift key, then click the “Continue in Safe Mode” button below your startup disk.
  5. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

If the screen anomaly does not occur, then it may possibly be a software issue.

If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode:

Leave safe mode by restarting your Mac normally, then try to reproduce the issue.

If the issue doesn't return, it might have been resolved by the other things that safe mode did at startup, such as checking your disk and clearing caches.

If the problem persists, then let’s try this:

If none of those ideas work, then I recommend service.

I've had similar dead keyboard-and-trackpad problems since July 2023. Problem doesn't start on log-in, just under these circumstances:

-- if computer has been asleep

-- if computer lid has been closed (or even almost closed)

-- if computer is on battery, the freeze begins "randomly" while in use or while at rest. Maybe there is a battery level that triggers the freeze, but I haven't determined that.

So I keep my computer plugged in and never close the lid or put it to sleep. Not ideal for travel, of course. And I always use a mouse and carry an external portable keyboard if I do travel with computer.

I don't know if this info helps you. Good luck.
