Again, yes, you will need that social security number or an equivalent for most financial-related activities in the US.
You won’t be able to do pretty much anything financial-related in the US without what amounts to the national ID number; without the social security number (SSN), or a taxpayer identification number (TIN) for those ineligible for an SSN, or an employer ID (EID) for legal entities other than people.
That restriction applies to obtaining banking, jobs, obtaining government benefits, trading stocks and bonds, and of course taxes and withholdings, among other activities. And definitely applies to the know-your-customer (KYC) requirements for banking and financial transfers of money past comparatively trivial amounts.
